Accountant – Job Description

Accountants are responsible for financial tracking and analysis within their scope of employment; either a government agency, a cooperate entity, a small business, a non-profit entity, or a private client. An accountant will be expected to prepare (and review) financial documents, such as, profit and loss statements, income statements, statements of cash flow, and balance sheets. They may also be required to audit financial information, consult management across several financial platforms, conduct financial risk analysis, manage and administer payroll, and/or prepare and tax returns.

Accountant Job Duties:

  • Analyzing account information and resolving financial discrepancies
  • Auditing financial documentation (balance sheets, cash flow, income statements, etc.)
  • Creating financial documentation (balance sheets, cash flow, income statements, etc.)
  • Maintaining and creating records of financial transactions
  • Consulting management regarding future financial action
  • Preparing and ensuring payments between business entities
  • Managing payroll related activity
  • Creating and managing internal control systems to ensure financial security
  • Ensuring a business’ financial compliance with federal, state, and local requirements
    • Must remain informed regarding the related legislation
  • Preparing tax-related documentation
  • Presenting various financial reports, typically to inform financial decisions regarding budgeting, business planning, and fiscal responsibility

Any individual looking to work as an accountant will be expected to have obtained at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.  An accountant may also be expected to pursue further education, or obtain voluntary certifications as a method of proving expertise in certain areas.
